Being in a Pickle, yet Cool as a Cucumber

Last Saturday, we had our second prep day at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church! With a spacious kitchen, plenty of counter space, and wonderful volunteers, we were able to prep a generous 92 pounds of food for the freezer. While some days run as smoothly as this Saturday did, others have a few hiccups. On our September 1st prep day, my large car that we use to transport the incredible vegetable donations from Spiral Path Farm broke down at the market. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the prep day, but the residents from Montgomery County’s Pre-Release Center who help us at the Fresh Farm Market each week were also able to deliver the produce to the Church. According to Cheryl, the power also went out on our September 1st prep day due to a large rainstorm – however, with the gas-powered stoves and adequate natural lighting, our dedicated prep team persevered! Obstacles will always arise, as is the nature of a start-up project, but each week we are able to respond to these situations and find creative solutions. In spite of these glitches, the food we prepped during these past two Saturdays will feed over 250 people over the course of three meals that Bethesda Cares serves to the hungry.

The new crop of apples have arrived at farmers’ markets and we’ve received a generous donation – 50 pounds from Historic Round Barn Farm. On September 22nd, Farm to Freezer partners with Adat Shalom Congregation that will prepare apples for cooking, as part of their special Sabbath program. Farm to Freezer will make apple sauce that will add to the week’s bounty of prepared tomato sauce and blanched vegetables for Bethesda Cares‘ daily meals program. We look forward to the festive aroma of this fall treat!

We are thrilled that our volunteer corps has been growing throughout the summer – so much so that the remaining four prep days of the season are filling up! If you’d like to volunteer, please sign-up on our Meet-Up page and add your name to the wait list if a particular prep day is filled, since  we often have late cancellations. We look forward to cooking with you!
With Gratitude,

Katie
